Men's and Women's Tennis Sweep Saint Francis (N.Y.) For First Spring Win

BALTIMORE, Md. - Men's and women's tennis opened the spring season with a strong showing against Saint Francis (N.Y.), Friday night at Baltimore's Greenspring Racquet Club. Both teams recorded wins over the Terriers, with then men coming through with some tough tiebreakers.

The men started the `Hounds off by going 3-0 in doubles. Keyan Sanai and J. Pierce Norton opened up with an 8-1 win over Tita Mba and Daniel Gonzales. Kevin Zingler and Ryan Fitzgerald defeated Danhaldi Robinson and Martin Grunin 9-8 (5). Dan D'Agostino and Jamie Russo closed out doubles play with an 8-0 win over Atiba Fraser and Raphael Anglobaldo.

The Terriers finally got a win in No. 1 singles play, as Mba defeated Sanai 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. The Terriers looks as though they were threatening the `Hounds lead during a four-set match between Norton and Robinson. But Mba would remain Saint Francis' first and only winner of the day, as Norton went on to win the final tiebreaker. Norton won 6-1, 6-7 (9), (4).

Zingler then won his next tilt in No. 3 singles action, 6-3, 6-2, against James Brennan Tsang. McDaniel then beat Gonzales 6-2, 6-1, and Bobby Gorczakowski notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alex Tokarz. Fitzgerald closed out play for the men with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win.

The women had an equally stellar performance, despite being plagued by injuries and being without top player Rachel Janasek.

 

 

All three doubles pairs recorded identical scores of 8-1, giving Loyola a 1-0 advantage coming into singles play. Kerri Swan and Joy Johnson started the Greyhounds off with a win against Arianna Van Sluytman. Judy Lite and Stephanie Dunn defeated Colene Alexis and Shakaya Slay and Jackie Lionetta and Lane Maloney finished off for Loyola by taking their match against Angel Lawrence and Shimiere Douglas.

Swan won the first tilt in singles action against Van Sluytan, taking the match 6-2, 6-3. Loyola absolutely dominated from that point on, with Johnson, Lite, Lionetta, Maloney and Dunn all earning 6-0, 6-0 wins.

Johnson defeated Alexis in No. 2 singles, Lite defeated Slay, Lionetta won against Warner, Maloney overtook Lawrence and Dunn finished off the Greyhounds' sweep with a sweep of her own against Ashley Del Orbe.

The men improved to 2-1 on the season, while the women remain undefeated at 3-0.
