Three Greyhounds Earn Academic All-District First Team Honors

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland women’s soccer seniors Gigi Mangione (Baltimore, Md./McDonough School) and Nichole Schiro (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), in addition to men’s soccer junior goalkeeper Thurman Van Riper (Groton, Mass./Groton), have been named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District II First Teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
The trio is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration in voting that will take place in the coming weeks.
Mangione, a communications major carrying a 3.82 grade-point average, was just named to the All-MAAC First Team after earning second-team honors last year. The two-time team captain has helped the Greyhounds to three MAAC Tournaments throughout her career, including being named the MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Player after leading the team to the title in 2009.
A central midfielder, Mangione leads the team with five assists and also has a goal from her position this year. Throughout her career, she has scored nine goals and assisted on 13 for 31 points.
While this is her first Academic All-District honor, she has been tabbed to the MAAC All-Academic Team three times and was named a Magis Scholar Leader by Loyola in September, an award that recognizes students who complement superior academic performance with co-curricular involvement.
Schiro recently became the first player in MAAC history to win the same individual award three years in a row, being voted the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. The forward led the league with 14 goals in 2012 and has shattered the school's career record with 51 goals and 117 points.
A three-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree and seven-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, Schiro has garnered Dean’s List honors all six semesters she has completed at Loyola. She maintains a 3.88 grade-point average as a biology/pre-medicine major and is a member of Loyola’s Green & Grey Society, a group of 14 students who are a liaison between the student body and the University president.
Schiro, an Academic All-District selection for the second-straight year, was also one of 30 candidates selected nationwide for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award.
Van Riper, an accounting major who maintains a 3.92 grade-point average, has earned three MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this year and helped Loyola to the regular-season MAAC title and the top seed in next week’s conference tournament. He leads the league with 6.1 shutouts and is ranked second with a 0.91 goals-against average and a .817 save percentage.
A member of the Business School’s Selliger Scholars program, a small honors group that recognizes the top students in the department, Van Riper was also a Magis Scholar Leader Award honoree and received the business department’s sophomore achievement award for his work in the classroom that year.
A MAAC All-Academic team selection last year, Van Riper becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn Academic All-District honors since senior Phil Bannister received first-team accolades in 2010.
Loyola’s women’s team will open MAAC Championships play on Friday, taking on Fairfield at Marist’s Tenney Stadium in the semifinal round of the tournament at 5 p.m.
The men’s team will be back in action next week, as the Greyhounds’ final regular-season game at Rider was cancelled. Loyola will take the No. 1 seed into the conference tournament and will face No. 4 Iona on Thursday, Nov. 8 at Marist’s Tenney Stadium at 9 p.m.
