Greyhounds Sweep MAAC Women's Soccer Awards
Oct. 6, 2008
EDISON, N.J. - Loyola's women's soccer team earned three weekly awards from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference today, as Theresa Ferraina was named Offensive Player of the Week, Brittany Henderson was Co-Defensive Player of the Week, and Maggie Ebner picked up Rook of the Week honors.
The trio helped the Greyhounds (4-5-2 overall, 2-0-0 MAAC) open their conference schedule with a pair of wins, a 4-0 victory over Iona on Friday and a 1-0 defeat of Fairfield Sunday.
Ferraina extended her team-leading points total in each of the matches, finishing the weekend with a goal and three assists. She now tops the squad in goals (5), assists (6) and points (16) through 11 matches. Ferraina leads the MAAC in assists, is third in points and tied for fifth in goals scored.
On Friday, Ferraina ignited the Greyhounds' offense, assisting on the team's first two goals. She beat her defender with a quick burst of speed, then crossed the ball to a waiting Lea Day, who knocked in the first goal from just inside the six 83 seconds into the match. Ferraina, then beat her marking defender, dribbled around three others and sent a pass to Christina Gomez who finished with a goal to put Loyola ahead, 2-0.
Ferraina got one for herself in the second half, running onto a Kristina Balfoort pass, beating her defender and knocking a hard shot off the inside of the far post for the Greyhounds' fourth goal. On Sunday, she sent a free kick into the box where Ebner finished it with a header for the game's only score.
Henderson put together back-to-back shutouts against Iona and Fairfield behind a solid effort from the Greyhounds defensive unit. She made four saves, including a point-blank diving stab of a Nicole Cavallaro attempt in the second half to preserve the win over Fairfield.
Playing her first two collegiate games, Ebner made an immediate impact. She tallied a goal in each game, both coming on set plays, including the game-winner versus the Stags.
She entered the game late in the first half against Iona and promptly put the ball in the net. Ebner took a Lina Staropoli corner kick out of midair and struck a waist-high, hard shot into the goal.
On Sunday, she got a head on Ferraina's free kick to post the only scoring in Loyola's 1-0 victory. Ebner was also a part of Loyola's defensive unit that held two teams scoreless for 180 minutes.
The honors bring Loyola's MAAC award total to five for the season. Henderson picked up Defensive Player of the Week laurels last week after the Greyhounds defeated Villanova and American.
Loyola hits the road for the first of four-straight away contests on Friday, October 10, at 4 p.m. versus Saint Peter's.
