Schiro Named Nominee For Senior CLASS Award
Sept. 18, 2012
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Loyola University Maryland senior forward Nichole Schiro was named one of 30 candidates nationally for the Senior CLASS Award on Tuesday, honoring her achievements on and off the soccer field.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I seniors and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
Schiro is the third Loyola women's soccer player to be a candidate in the prestigious honor in the six-year history of the award. Former Greyhounds Theresa Ferrains (2009) and Lina Staropoli (2010) were also nominees.
"Nichole is the exemplification of what it means to be a student-athlete because of what she does in the classroom and on the field," said Loyola Head Coach Katherine Remy Vettori. "Her leadership on the field is tremendous, leading by example with her work rate and her success. She is one of the most positive captains I've ever had as a coach. She is very unique as a player and person, and I am so happy for her to be recognized."
In her three-plus seasons at Loyola, Schiro has put her name atop the school's scoring charts, setting the Loyola career goals scored record in 2011 and the points mark earlier this year.
Through eight matches this season, Schiro has five goals, increasing her record total to 42 for her career. Just over a week ago in a game at American University, Schiro became the school's all-time leader in points and now has 95 in her career.
A two-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year (2010 and 2011), Schiro was a Capital One Academic All-District performer as a junior and has excelled in the classroom.
She is a biology major with a pre-medicine emphasis. Through three years at Loyola, Schiro has posted a 3.876 grade point average.
In the community, the Michigan native has tutored underclass students in science and volunteered at nearby Mercy Hospital. Schiro has also volunteered as a youth soccer coach and participated in the Special Olympics' Polar Bear Plunge and efforts to raise money and awareness for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
The 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Schiro and the Greyhounds will embark on a two-match road trip this weekend, beginning when they take on Stony Brook University Friday night.
