Schiro and Tana Earn MAAC Weekly Awards
Aug. 22, 2011
EDISON, N.J. - Loyola University Maryland junior Nichole Schiro earned the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season, while freshman Gabrielle Tana was named the league’s rookie of the week, the league office announced Monday.
Schiro, a forward from Okemos, Mich., played a strong offensive game in the Greyhounds’ 2-0 loss at Towson. She had three shots, including two on net.
The junior generated several quality scoring chances for Loyola. Early in the contest, Schiro navigated through the Towson defense and beat keeper Jocelyn Papciak, but the shot was blocked by a Towson defender, who cleared the ball away just before the ball crossed the goal line. She also placed a header on net and was robbed of a goal in the second half on a diving save by Papciak.
Schiro also impacted the game with her passing, setting up Tana for a quality attempt in the second half that went just wide.
The award is the first of the season for Schiro, while it marks the fifth of her career.
Tana provided a much-needed spark off the bench for the Greyhounds in her first collegiate action. The midfielder from Baltimore, Md., helped generate scoring opportunities for Loyola in the second half. Tana controlled the midfield and played solid defense from her outside mid position, coming just inches away from tying the game in the second half. She started a counter attack with solid defense and then fired a shot just wide of the Towson goal.
This marks the first career award for Tana.
Loyola hosts No. 6 Maryland tonight in its season opener at Ridley Athletic Complex. The game will mark the first of Loyola’s Youth Nights in which kids wearing any team or school jersey will get in free with a full paid adult admission. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
