McGirr Joins Women's Soccer Staff As An Assistant
June 4, 2014
BALTIMORE - Jim McGirr, the former head coach at Providence College, has joined the women’s soccer staff at Loyola University Maryland as an assistant coach, Head Coach Naomi Meiburger announced today.
“I’m really excited to add Jim to our staff at Loyola,” Meiburger said. “Jim is a well-respected coach and someone I know will add to the positive culture we are building within the program. His East Coast ties will prove to be invaluable as we continue to recruit the top athletes and students to our program. I’m looking forward to working with Jim and I know our student-athletes will benefit from his experiences and expertise."
McGirr, a veteran to the women’s soccer world, returns to Loyola after spending a year on the Evergreen Campus from 2002-03 as an assistant to then-Head Coach Joe Mallia. During his time, he helped the Greyhounds to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
“I’m excited to be back at Loyola and help return the program to a winning-tradition,” McGirr. “Naomi has been a dear friend for many years and I’m looking forward to working with her side-by-side on a daily basis. During my previous time at Loyola, Ridley Athletic Complex was a conversation piece and now to see it in place and actively running is exciting for the program and department.“
Prior to his return, McGirr spent nine seasons as the head coach at Providence College. In his first stint at head coach, he trained and developed five Big East All-Conference players and led the Friars to the 2011 Big East quarterfinals. The next year, the Friars received the 2012 NCAA Public Recognition Award given to the top 10 percent of teams nationally in the Academic Progress Rate report.
Before he was head coach at Providence, McGirr was an assistant coach at Villanova University from 2003-05. He helped the Wildcats to two NCAA Tournament appearances, defeating Princeton and Virginia in the first two rounds of the 2003 tournament. The team made it to the Round of 16, falling to BYU, 5-3, in penalty kicks. During his time at Villanova the team garnered national rankings by the NSCAA and reached as high as fourth in the Mid-Atlantic rankings.
McGirr started coaching collegiate women’s soccer at Rutgers University, volunteering for the Scarlet Knights in 2001. He helped guide the team to a Round of 16 appearance, after serving as the men’s assistant coach at Lafayette College in 2000.
On the club level, McGirr was at the helm of the New Jersey Olympic Development Program from 1997-2002. He also worked with the Wyckoff Torpedoes Under-19 Girls Club Team (1998-2001), the Player Development Academy for the Under-17 boys team (2000-02) and technical director/assistant coach of the Baltimore Bays Under-14 Girls Club Team (2002-03).
McGirr graduated from Rider University and played three seasons with the Broncs.
