Navy Holds Off Women's Soccer In 3-0 Victory
Oct. 27, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team dropped its final road game of the season at the United States Naval Academy, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Navy (15-3 overall, 8-0 Patriot League) scored less than one minute into regulation, on a Julie Schumacher free kick. The cross made its way into the box, and found the head of Ashyln Soellner. Soellner's header found the top corner of the net.
Eleven minutes later, Schumacher and Shoellner found success on the same play, this time on the near side, extending the Midshipmen's lead to 2-0.
Loyola (2-11-3, 1-6-1) found its first opportunity to score in the 34th minute, when freshman Nicole Wojcik took a long-midfield pass from fellow classmate Maddie Boccio. Wojcik beat both of her defenders to go one-on-one with Navy's goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner. Hoerner caught the shot attempt and kept the Greyhounds scoreless in the first half.
In the 65th minute, Navy scored on its third set piece of the afternoon. Rachel Hunter took the Mids' nearside corner kick and sent the ball to Lexi Ricketts for the header into the back of the net.
Senior Didi Haracic played all 90 minutes in goal for the Greyhounds, recording four saves against the Midshipmen.
Navy outshot the Greyhounds 14-3, including 5-1 in corners.
Loyola will close out the regular season on Sautrday, Nov. 2, when the Greyhounds host Lafayette College for senior day at Ridley Athletic Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
