Women's Soccer Rolls To 9-0 Win Over St. Peter's
Oct. 7, 2007
Baltimore, Md. - Theresa Ferraina scored twice in the opening 13 minutes of action as the women's soccer team cruised to a 9-nil victory over Saint Peter's College at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds, who improve to 1-0-1 in the MAAC with the win, held the Peahens without a shot en route to their second straight shutout.
The scoring began in the second minute of play when Lina Staropoli converted a short corner and touch pass from Kelly Thomas into a goal. Ferraina doubled the Greyhound margin at 6:15, and then increased the lead to 3-nil with her second straight goal at 12:23.
The `Hounds took a commanding 4-0 lead into the halftime lockeroom when Marissa Greco lofted a shot over prone Peahen keeper Reanna Gibbs in the 23rd minute. Loyola would continue its dominant play in the second stanza with four more goals, the first coming from Balfoort at 54:04.
A goal from Farrell at 59:55, and a counterattack tally from Lea Day, who found herself one-on-one with the keeper in the 62nd minute, put the Greyhounds out front 7-nil. Balfoort and Farrell posted the final two scores to give Loyola its fourth win of the season.
The Greyhounds outshot Saint Peter's 29-0 and took seven corners to one for the Peahens. Loyola's nine goals equals its total over the past six games and is the most scored by the Greyhounds in over five seasons.
Loyola, now 4-5-2, will look to get back to .500 for the season when it hosts Rider this Saturday at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
