Women's Soccer Battles To 1-1 Tie Versus Army
Oct. 5, 2013
BALTIMORE - Freshman Nicole Wahlig scored the lone goal for the Loyola University Maryland women’s soccer team, as the Greyhounds tied the United States Military Academy, 1-1, Saturday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Wahlig scored her first goal at home, and her second of the season, in the 25th minute from a Charlotte Miller corner kick. Miller took the corner from the near side and sent the ball into the box, where Wahlig was able to knock in the header for the first goal of the contest.
Wahlig’s goal was the first home point for the Greyhounds since Tuesday, Sept. 10, when Loyola tied local non-conference rival UMBC, 1-1, at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Army responded to Loyola’s early 1-0 lead as Candace Stewart made a long cross from the far side into the feet of Joey Molacek. Molacek went one-on-one with Loyola’s Didi Haracic from inside the box to tie the score 1-1 in the 38th minute.
Both teams ended the first half with a combined 13 shots, and two corner kicks each.
The second half slowed down for both teams, as the Black Knights took only three shots to Loyola’s five.
With 10 seconds remaining in regulation, the Greyhounds were awarded a quick corner kick. Miller once again took advantage of the opportunity and made a quick short pass to Melissa Lookingland on the right wing. The senior defender took the shot, but Army’s Jordan Cassalia was there for the save, and the game continued into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Black Knights outshot the Greyhounds 4-1, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
In the 103rd minute, Kimberly An gave Army the best opportunity to score. The Black Knights’ leading scorer took a shot just inside the box, but the ball sailed into the air and bounced off the cross bar.
Haracic recorded a season-high 11 saves Saturday evening, while Cassalia tabbed one save in goal for Army.
Loyola takes the week to prepare for it’s next game on Saturday, Oct. 12 against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Bethlehem, Pa.
