Women's Soccer Opens MAAC Schedule with 2-0 Win Over Siena
Oct. 3, 2003
BATIMORE, MD - Loyola dominated all 90 minutes of play in a 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win over Siena Friday on Curley Field. The Greyhounds improved to 3-6 and 1-0 in the conference while the Saints fell to 4-5 and 0-1.
The Greyhounds first goal was scored by freshman Kaitlin Klar ay 29:06. The play originated from a corner kick by Courtney Arikian from the right corner to Carolyn Kennington. Kennington tapped the ball into Klar on the left hand of the goal. Klar easily beat Siena's Noel Cox for the goal. It was Klar's first collegiate goal while Kennington and Arikian were credited with the assist.
Siena saw little of their side of the field in the first half of play and did not record any shots in the first 45 minutes.
Kennington scored an insurance goal for Loyola at 54:27 with an easy shot into the left corner of the net on a pass for Arikian.
"I thought we did a great job of possessing the ball today," head coach Joe Mallia said. "We were patient and stayed organized defensively. We had to come prepared to defeat Siena, they are always ready to play, but we finished some chances and got our first MAAC victory."
The Saints only shot came at 61:16 when Erin Beam was given an indirect kick but her attempt went wide left of the goal. The Greyhounds outshot Siena 13-1.
Sophomore Kate Gilfillan earned her second shutout for Loyola while Cox recorded three saves in the loss.
Loyola also hosts Marist this weekend, on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 on Curley Field.
