BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team dropped a Metro Atlantic Conference contest to Fairfield, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Fairfield (5-3-2, 2-0-0 MAAC) took an early lead in the match before junior Jenny Thornton was able to find the equalizer for Loyola (5-4-3, 1-1-0) in the 30th minute. The Stags responded a minute later though to provide the difference.

"Didi [Haracic] did her job in goal today," head coach Katherine Vettori said. "We created a lot of chances in the second half, we just didn't finish them."

In the 17th minute, Carly Beyar drew two defenders and managed to get the ball ahead. Ashley Small ran onto the ball and went one-on-one with junior goalkeeper Didi Haracic, beating her with a low shot to the right corner.

Loyola then answered in the 30th minute when junior Katelyn McFadden spun around in front of a Fairfield defender and sent a ball out to Thornton on the right wing. Thornton sailed a kick from about 30 yards out into the top left corner of the goal to tie the game at one apiece.

The Stags answered quickly though, when Jessica Broadbent played a ball across the field to Erin Pettersen inside the box. Pettersen headed it into the back of the net to provide the game-winner for Fairfield.

Haracic came up big for the Greyhounds, turning back four shots, while senior Gigi Mangione also sent a ball off the goal line in the 67th minute to hold the Stags.

Loyola will return to action next weekend, beginning a three-game road swing at Saint Peter's on Friday at 7 p.m. The Greyhounds will also visit Manhattan on Sunday at 1 p.m., before heading to Rider the following weekend.
