Loyola Withstands Furious Final Minutes, Defeats Bucknell
Sept. 30, 2007
BALTIMORE - Loyola College rallied from a 1-0 deficit and scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to post a 2-1 non-conference victory over visiting Bucknell University on Sunday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
Lina Staropoli scored the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining on a 15-foot shot from the left side of the goal area.
The teams developed a back-and-forth pace with much of the early part of the match played in the midfield.
Loyola (3-5-1) had the best chances of the first half. Christina Gomez slid a shot just left of the goal in the 25th minute, and Lina Staropoli drove a shot, off a Theresa Ferraina corner kick, high in the 43rd.
A similar pace developed in the second half until the final 12 minutes.
After Bucknell (4-6) knocked the ball out of bounds over the end line, Ferraina set up for a corner kick on the left side. She struck a near-perfect ball that Gomez settled in the box and drove at goal from 12 feet out. The shot slid just high and rebounded down off the crossbar.
Bucknell managed to punch the ball out in the open where Jennifer Dervarics corralled it and raced toward goal. Dervarics went one-on-one with Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson and struck a low shot toward goal. Henderson made a full-extenstion save while diving to her right.
The Bison managed another good shot less than a minute later as Kelliann Doherty forced Henderson to make another difficult save.
Bucknell finally took a 1-0 lead 79:48 into the game when Dervarics converted a penalty kick opportunity after a Loyola player was called for a foul in the box.
In the ensuing minutes after Dervarics' goal, Loyola controlled most of the possession and kept the pressure on Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah Seltzer.
In the 82nd minute, Ferraina crossed a pass in front of the goal from the right side that Lea Day directed to Gomez on with one touch. Gomez finished the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Loyola would get the next shot opportunity in the 87th minute. Seltzer picked up a loose ball just outside of the box, giving the Greyhounds a direct kick opportunity.
Gomez lobbed a ball over the Bucknell wall but again hit the crossbar and was denied her second goal.
The Greyhounds, however, did break through with the game winner less than a minute later as Staropoli scored the winner.
Henderson made four saves in goal for the Greyhounds, who play their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the year on Friday, October 5, at 4 p.m., against Manhattan.
