Balanced Attack Leads Greyhounds To 4-0 Win Over Iona

BALTIMORE - Four different Greyhounds contributed their first goal of the season to lead the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of Iona in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Senior Gigi Mangione scored in the third minute of play before senior Kelsey Donohue recorded a goal to give the Greyhounds (5-3-3, 1-0-0 MAAC) a 2-0 halftime advantage over the Gaels (2-5-2, 0-1-0). Senior Lauren Norcia then notched a score three minutes into the second half and Chantal Celestin closed out the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute.
"To have a balanced attack is always a good thing," head coach Katherine Vettori said. "To score three minutes in and finish it out with a minute left, that's a good night."
The Greyhounds came out attacking as junior Jenny Thornton played a ball from the far sideline to Mangione at the top of the box. Mangione flicked it to senior Nichole Schiro, setting up a give-and-go situation, where Schiro one-touched the ball right back to Mangione. The Baltimore, Md., native then fired a shot from the right side across the goal and into the back of the net.
Loyola added to its lead in the 40th minute when sophomore Julia Hajjar played a cross to Schiro, who headed it to a streaking Donohue. Iona's goalkeeper got a hand on Donohue's shot, but the ball reflected into the top right corner of the net to the Baltimore, Md., native her first collegiate goal.
Following a foul on the Gaels in the 48th minute, the Greyhounds set up a set piece that saw junior Melissa Lookingland run over the ball before Norcia fired a free kick into the top left corner of the goal for her first goal of the season.
Celestin then capped off the victory for the Greyhounds with a goal from a little over 30 yards out. Celestin settled a ball before lobbing a shot over Iona's goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
In goal, junior Didi Haracic stopped three shots to post her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career.
With the win, Loyola bumps to 17-2-2 all-time in MAAC openers and 4-1-0 under Vettori.
Loyola will look to carry its momentum into a contest against Fairfield on Sunday. The Greyhounds and Stags will meet at Ridley Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
