Greyhounds Close Non-Conference Schedule With OT Loss At Fordham
Sept. 23, 2012
BRONX, N.Y. - Senior Nichole Schiro scored early, but Fordham rallied to tie the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team before scoring the game-winning goal in the first minute of overtime in a 2-1 contest played Sunday afternoon at the Jack Coffey Field.
The game marked the final non-conference contest for the Greyhounds (4-3-3), as they begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play next weekend. The win marks the second-straight for the Rams (4-6) against a MAAC opponent, as they defeated Fairfield, 4-1, on Friday. They also own a 1-0 road win over Maryland this season, a team receiving votes in the national poll.
"We created a lot of quality scoring opportunities today," head coach Katherine Vettori said. "It was a physical game against a hard working team that has a lot of potential to be dangerous. Didi [Haracic] played a great game in goal. Now we must focus on the future and conference play and take the lesson we learned from today's loss to heart."
Victoria Camaj scored the game-winning goal on her lone shot of the game, sending a chip shot past Haracic in the 91st minute.
Loyola took a 1-0 advantage in the contest in the 36th minute when freshman Julia Hajjar played a long ball to Schiro on the right side. The senior from Okemos, Mich., refrained from shooting on her first touch of the ball, but finished the play by sending a shot past Fordam's goalkeeper, Ally White, for the game's first goal.
The Greyhounds held their lead through halftime, but Kaitlin Abrams notched a goal for the Rams on a header off a corner kick in the 67th minute to tie the contest.
Haracic finished the game with seven saves for the Greyhounds, moving her season total to 52 saves.
Loyola will begin MAAC play on Friday when it hosts Iona at Ridley Athletic Complex at 7 p.m. The Greyhounds will also play Fairfield on Sunday at 1 p.m.
