Schiro's OT Header Lifts Women's Soccer Past UMBC
Sept. 22, 2010
BALTIMORE - Gianna Mangione had an open look at the goal on an early possession, but her shot was saved by UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet.
Mangione would trigger Loyola's next possession from the midfield. She pushed a pass out wide right to Kelly Farrell who dribbled to about eight yards inside the end line. Farrell crossed a pass to Schiro who headed the ball into the right side of the net for the game-winning goal.
Schiro's goal was her second of the match, marking her third multi-goal effort of the season and second in three games. She leads the team with seven goals this year.
The teams played to a scoreless draw until the 44th minute, when Farrell played a through ball to an onrushing Sciro at the top of the 18. Schiro raced around a UMBC defender and drew out Kadet from her line. She then drove a low shot into the left side of the goal to post a 1-0 lead for Loyola.
UMBC tied the game with 27:22 left in regulation off a corner kick. Aly Gazarek sent a corner into the box that was deflected out by a Loyola defender. The ball, however, came to the feet of Christine Sadowski who hit a hard shot into the left side of the goal.
Loyola controlled much of the tempo and offensive chances before Schiro's first half goal, but the Greyhounds could not convert a chance into a goal.
In the 30th minute, Nichole Schiro made a run down the right side line and crossed it into the box. Alex Reed beat a defender and got around UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet, but her shot attempt was cleared off the goal line by a Retrievers' defender.
The Retrievers (1-7-1) also had a golden chance that they could not turn into points. With under seven minutes to play in the first half, Erin Johnson dribbled to within 15 yards, passed left side to Amy Savage. Savage then took shot from 10 yards out, but Loyola goalkeeper Danielle Ippolito made diving save.
Ippolito finished with seven saves, while Kadet had five for the Retrievers.
Loyola is back in action at Ridley Athletic Complex when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
