BALTIMORE - Sophomore Katelyn McFadden's first career goal pushed the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team past American University, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The match was the first since Sept. 11 for the Greyhounds (2-7-0), who earned their first shutout of the season. Sophomore keeper Didi Haracic recorded her first career shutout, making two stops in net while captaining the Loyola defensive effort.
"Didi was very composed and played strong for us tonight," said head coach Katherine Remy Vettori. "She has given us a great effort all season. Our defense also played much better in front of her than we did in previous games. I was pleased with our intensity and our preparation overall."
McFadden gave the Greyhounds all the offense they would need, tallying her first career goal in the 32nd minute. Gigi Mangione created the opportunity, chipping a ball over the top of the defense to find a streaking McFadden on the left side of the box who fired a shot with her right foot off a bouncing ball that beat keeper Klare Lazor into the right side of the goal.
"It was a really smart ball played by Gigi," Vettori said of the play. "It was great to see Katelyn get the goal. She's been working so hard, running end line to end line for us and she has come so close in the past. I was happy to see her get one."
The Greyhound defense made the goal stand-up through the second half, controlling possession and limiting the offensive opportunities for the Eagles. Loyola held American without a corner kick in the entire match while allowing only five total shots.
The five shots were the fewest allowed by Loyola in a match this season, while the shutout was the first for the Greyhounds since Oct. 22, 2010 against Manhattan. The victory also improved the Greyhounds to 9-3-1 at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Loyola travels to La Salle on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. for their final nonconference match of the season before beginning MAAC play at home on Oct. 1 against Rider at 1 p.m.
