Sept. 15, 2013
PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle Explorers defeated the Loyola University Maryland women’s soccer team, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia.
Kelsey Haycook, the Atlantic 10’s leading goal scorer, scored early in the first half for La Salle, taking a shot from the far right wing. Emily Fenton recorded the assist with a through ball past the Loyola defense. Haycook’s first goal put the Explorers up 1-0 in the ninth minute of action.
Thirteen minutes later, Gabrielle Tana gave the Greyhounds their first opportunity to score, but the shot was saved by La Salle’s Katie Getzinger.
The Explorers gathered their second goal in the 55th minute, as Fenton’s rebound bounced off the post and was struck into the back of the goal by Haycook.
La Salle wasted no time putting its third point on the board, as Ashley Chilcoat’s shot from 30 yards out hit the cross bar and bounced in in the 65th minute.
Following the third goal, Loyola turned up the offensive pressure and recorded three more shots, including two by senior Chantal Celestin. The veteran midfielder led the offensive effort with three shots, and one on goal.
The Explorers rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 70th minute.
Defensively Loyola forced seven offside calls.
Didi Haracic anchored the defense, ending up with six saves. She made several difficult stops, including one by Haycook midway through the first half to keep the Greyhounds within one.
Throughout the game, La Salle held a 22-7 advantage in shots, including 10-3 on goal.
Loyola returns home Tuesday, Sept. 17, to take on the George Mason Patriots. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
