Greyhounds Can't Top American; Fall 3-1
Sept. 14, 2003
WASHINGTON, DC - Kate Gilfillan made five saves in her first collegiate start but it was not enough as American University defeated Loyola, 3-1, Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds fall to 1-4 on the season with the Eagles improved to 2-3.
Loyola's goal was earned by an own goal by American's keeper, Lauren Wohl when one of the AU defenders passed the ball back to Wohl and she missed the pass just three minutes into the contest.
The Greyhounds defense contained the Eagle's offensive efforts throughout the first half before Simone Konig rebounded a shot from Kristie Fontana past Loyola keeper Gilfillan at 55:52.
Anabel Jimenez gave American a 2-1 lead just over three minutes later when she took a header from Marcela Ricupero and tapped the ball into the low left corner of the goal.
Ricupero later added an insurance goal off a midfield pass from Jana Lee at 62:20.
American barely outshot Loyola, 17-16 but Wohl was credited with 10 saves on the outing.
The Greyhounds return to action on Thursday, Sept. 18 when they travel to College Park to face the University of Maryland in the opening round of the Maryland/adidas Classic.
