Greyhounds, Virginia Tech Play to 1-1 Draw
Sept. 9, 2007
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Loyola's Lea Day scored the game-tying goal in the 56th minute, and the Greyhounds held off nine Virginia Tech shots in overtime, as the teams played to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational.
The Hokies (2-1-1) got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute as Laurie Beth Puglisi scored off an assist from Robin Chidester.
Loyola (1-2-1) took only two first half shots, to the Hokies' nine, but the Greyhounds scored on their first shot of the second half.
Kelly Thomas fed a pass to Day, who finished the goal past Virginia Tech goalkeeper Ashley Owens to tie the game at a goal a piece.
The game remained tied through regulation and went into overtime. The Hokies took nine shots in the overtime periods, five in the first and four in the second, and they held Loyola without a shot.
Loyola's defense was strong, however, as only two of the shots were on goal, and Greyhounds goalkeeper Brittany Henderson made two of her game-high 10 saves in the extra time.
Virginia Tech held a 25-8 advantage on shots, but the Hokies only managed 11 shots on goal. Loyola, however, put six of its eight shots on goal against Owens, who made five saves.
The tie closed a strong weekend of competition for the Greyhounds, who beat 24th-ranked Wake Forest, 2-1, in Friday's game at the invitational.
Henderson made 19 saves in the two matches, while Day finished with a goal and an assist. Thomas' assist against Virginia Tech was also her second of the weekend.
The Greyhounds continue non-conference action when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Colorado College Invitational. The Greyhounds play Marquette on Friday, September 14, at 1:30 p.m. (MDT), the take on the host Tigers on Sunday, September 16, at 1:30 (MDT).
