Late Goal Lifts Monarchs Past Greyhounds
Sept. 2, 2007
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University junior Shavon Knight scored two goals, including the game-winner late in the second half, to give the Monarchs a 2-1 victory over visiting Loyola College on Sunday afternoon.
Knight put Old Dominion (1-0) on the board in the 14th minute with her first goal of the season. She took a long pass through the center of the field from freshman Ashley Kukura, dribbled a few times and scored.
Loyola (0-2) scored the equalizer shortly thereafter. Junior Theresa Ferraina corralled a loose ball at the top of the box, turned and drove a shot past Monarchs goalkeeper Lauren Tupman to tie the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 71st minute when Old Dominion scored off a corner kick.
Janna Pearson dropped the corner kick into the middle of the box, and Saratu Dodo knocked a header toward the goal. Knight finished it off with a header of her own to give the game its final margin.
Tupman and Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson each finished with four saves, and the teams both had 12 shots.
