Late Goal Helps Loyola To 1-1 Tie Against Towson
Aug. 31, 2012
BALTIMORE - Senior Nichole Schiro scored a goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation to help the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team to a, 1-1, tie against local-rival Towson on Friday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The tie moved Loyola to 1-1-2 on the year, while the Tigers went to 0-3-1.
Towson was able to generate an early scoring chance, when Cheyenne Skidmore recovered a loose ball 10-yards out and fired a shot that beat keeper Didi Haracic but hit the crossbar.
Loyola also threatened with an early chance, when freshman Charlotte Miller sent a cross through the six-yard box that found Nichole Schiro, but she was stopped by a sprawling save from Tiger goalie Erin Quinn.
Towson took a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute, as Kat Sipes sent a long through-ball down the right side to Cheyenne Skidmore, who beat keeper Didi Haracic one-on-one with a shot over her right shoulder and into the top-side netting.
Haracic was solid once again for the Greyhounds, making seven stops in net.
The Tigers would hold the 1-0 advantage as the two teams went to halftime, outshooting Loyola 6-3 in the first 45 minutes.
The Greyhounds controlled the pace of play and generated the majority of the scoring chances in the second half, the first coming in the 55th minute when Kelly Santangelo volleyed a cross over the bar.
Gigi Mangione had a chance later in the half, whistling a shot inches wide of the post.
Schiro was finally able to bring the two teams even, delivering in the waning moments of regulation. The senior netted her second goal of the season on a deflection, as Brittany Yancey sent a cross into the box that was volleyed by Tessa McClenehan and tipped in by Schiro into the right-side netting.
The goal was the 39th goal of her career and also tied her for first Loyola history in points with Carolyn Kennington with 89.
Towson had the best of the opportunitines in overtime when Emily Barnes hit the crossbar with just over a minute left in the first overtime, and Katie Holtzapple put the rebound slightly wide of the left post.
The tie kept Loyola undefeated all-time versus Towson at home at 4-0-2. The Greyhounds are 10-1-2 all-time against the Tigers.
Loyola remains home for its next contest, as the Greyhounds take on the Blue Hens from Delaware on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
