Greyhounds Drop 1-0 Decision to Dukes in Season-Opener
Aug. 31, 2007
BALTIMORE - James Madison junior midfielder Kimmy Germain scored at the 53:45 mark off a corner kick to provide the only scoring, as the Dukes beat host Loyola College, 1-0, in the season-opener for both teams Friday afternoon on Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
Freshman midfielder Teresa Rynier stared the play with a short corner kick to senior defender Laura Hertz who was running unmarked down the near sideline.
Hertz chipped the ball over the Greyhounds' defense and onto Germain's foot in the box. Germain turned and beat Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson with her shot.
Loyola (0-1) controlled the pace early in the game, just missing a chance in the fourth minute. Junior midfielder Lea Day crossed a ball from the right side of the field, however it slid just past the foot of freshman midfielder Lina Staropoli who was sliding in front of the goal.
The Dukes (1-0) had a near-miss opportunity in the 18th minute. Freshman Cate Tisinger, who led all players with three shots, had a clean run down the near sideline. She hit a medium-paced shot to the right of Henderson, but the Loyola goalkeeper made a diving save to thwart the scoring chance.
James Madison had its chances again later in the first half. The Dukes drew four corner kicks in a five-minute span, but the Dukes were unable to register a shot-on-goal from any of the opportunities.
The Dukes' best chance before halftime come in the 41st minute. Freshman Kate Dye stuck a hard shot from close range that Henderson caught above her head at full extension.
Loyola again seemed to have the tempo in its favor to start the second half. Day made two long runs down the right sideline in the first seven minutes, but neither results in a shot.
Each team managed only seven shots, and each goalkeeper finished with four saves.
The Greyhounds continue non-confernece action on Sunday, September 2, 2007, when they travel to Norfolk, Va., to play Old Dominion University at 1 p.m.
