Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener, 3-2, Over William & Mary
Aug. 27, 2004
Baltimore, Md. - Loyola's Ali Andrzejewski recorded a hat trick, scoring all three Greyhound goals in a 3-2 win over William & Mary at Albert-Daly Field Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams.
"This was a great start for our team, beating a program like William & Mary to open the season," head coach Joe Mallia said of the win.
Andrzejewski scored three goals on five shots, with two of those goals coming in the second half as the Greyhounds outshot the Tribe 11-9.
"Tonight was a great start for Ali," Mallia said. "She did a tremendous job finishing the chances she had."
The Tribe scored the first goal in the 18th minute, as Mary MacKenzie Grier gathered a loose ball deep in Greyhound territory and sent a through ball to Lydia Sturgis at the edge of the 18-yard box who turned and fired home a shot to the lower left corner to give W&M a 1-0 lead.
Loyola, which outshot the Tribe 7-5 in the first half, had its best scoring chance in the 30th minute when Andrzejewski knifed through the Tribe defense and had a one-one-one with Tribe goalkeeper Jenna Sommer, who came to the edge of the 18-yard box and turned away an Andrzejewski blast to preserve the lead.
After it appeared that the Tribe would go to the half with the lead, Tribe freshman Brittany Bode committed a handball in the box with five seconds left, giving Loyola a penalty kick, which Andrzejewski buried in the lower left corner to deadlock the match at one.
Andrzejewski gave the Greyhounds the lead it would never relinquish in the 53rd minute, as she fired a shot from 20 yards out that banged off the left post and into the net. The lead grew to 3-1 nine minutes later as Ellen Sroka drove down the right side of the Tribe box and flipped a pass to Andrzejewski, who was all alone from 15 yards out and fired
home a shot in the lower left corner.
The Tribe fought back to pull within one in the 79th minute. Katie Hogwood flew down the left flank and sent a cross right to the goal mouth, where Bode and Taline Tahmassian were there and after a tussle, Tahmassian flicked the ball over the line to cut the
lead to one, but Tribe managed no more goals after a strong offensive charge in the final 10 minutes, losing to Loyola 3-2.
"We played well throughout, but the end was a real gut check," Mallia said. "When it went 3-2, we were forced to see what we had inside of us and we came out great."
Sommer recorded three saves, while Loyola netminder Erica Niemann registered two saves.
The Greyhounds will host Villanova in their home opener on Tuesday, August 31 at Alumnae Field. Game time is set for 4:30.
