Rene, Van Dyke Lift Greyhounds Over Oakland, 2-1, Sunday
Aug. 26, 2012
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Kelsey Rene and Jessica Van Dyke each scored first-half goals as the Loyola University Maryland women’s soccer team defeated reigning Summit League champion Oakland, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, Mich., to grab their first win of the young season.
Didi Haracic made seven stops in goal, including two in the late stages of the game to help the Greyhounds hold on for the win.
"I'm really proud of how we came out and fought today," said head coach Katherine Remy Vettori. "We were playing our third game in five days against a quality side, and it really took a complete team effort to come out with a win."
The Greyhounds (1-1-1) struck first in the 18th minute of action, as Rene continued to show her prowess on set pieces. The senior headed home her fifth career goal off a free kick from freshman Rosy Hayes to put Loyola on top, 1-0. It was the first career assist for Hayes.
Another career first was recorded later in the first half, when Julia Hajjar played a through-ball to Van Dyke, who beat Oakland keeper Payj O’Shea one-on-one for her first career goal. The tally put the Greyhounds ahead, 2-0, in the 33rd minute.
The score remained that way until the 79th minute when Oakland’s Marlen Knoph beat Haracic to cut the Loyola lead to 2-1.
Haracic came up with a pair of big saves late in the contest, both coming against the Grizzlies’ Abigail Haelewyn. The first top came in the 84th minute and the last came with just 16 seconds remaining in the contest.
The victory was the first non-conference road win for the Greyhounds since beating American, 2-0, on September 18, 2009.
The Greyhounds return home to Ridley Athletic Complex to take on local-rival Towson on Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
