Michigan State Tops Loyola, 3-1, Friday Afternoon
Aug. 24, 2012
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Didi Haracic made career-high 12 saves, but the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team dropped a, 3-1, decision at Michigan State on Friday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
Haracic's 12 stops surpassed her previous career high of 10 set back on Oct. 21, 2012 against Canisius.
Nichole Schiro scored the lone goal of the match for Loyola (0-1-1) in her return to her home state of Michigan. The goal was the 38th of Schiro's career and gave her 87 career points, putting her just two behind Carolyn Kennington for the program all-time career record.
Haracic kept the teams even early, making three saves in the first 16 minutes.
The Spartans broke through against the All-MAAC goalkeeper in the 17th minute of action, as Paige Wester tallied her first goal of the season, floating a ball over Haracic's head. Jordan Mueller and Lisa Vogel assisted on the goal.
The Greyhounds drew even just six minutes later, as Gigi Mangione found Schiro on the right side of the 18-yard box to tie the game at one apiece.
The Okemos, Mich., native finished with three shots to lead Loyola, placing two on net.
Michigan State reclaimed the lead in the 33rd minute, when Chelsea Peterson fired a shot past Haracic from outside the penalty area to make it 2-1 Spartans as the teams went into halftime.
Olivia Stander pushed the Michigan State lead to 3-1 in the early stages of the second half, tallying on assists from Alexandra Heffron and Meagan Marsack in the 56th minute.
The Greyhounds had several chances to cut into the two-goal deficit, including a penalty kick by Mangione in the 58th minute, but it was stopped by Spartan keeper Courtney Chlem. Chlem finished with four saves.
Tessa McClenahan and Chantal Celestin also had shots on net in the game.
The Greyhounds finish their Michigan road trip against reigning Summit League champions, Oakland, on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 11:30 a.m.
