BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team opened the 2012 season at Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday night with a, 1-1, tie against visiting Howard.

The Greyhounds moved to 11-8-2 in season-opening games, including 1-2-2 under head coach Katherine Remy Vettori.

Loyola controlled most of the possession in the contest, and outshot the visiting Bison, 20-4. The Greyhounds also earned 13 corner kicks to just two for Howard. Senior Nichole Schiro and freshman Charlotte Miller each had four shots to lead the Greyhounds, with Schiro putting all four of hers on net.

The Greyhounds struck first in the contest, netting the season's first goal just eight minutes in. Gigi Mangione sent a cross into the box from the right side that deflected off the head of Howard defender Owyn Mason and past keeper Kyra Dickinson to put Loyola on top, 1-0.

Loyola keeper Didi Haracic helped keep that 1-0 advantage, smothering a cross in the 30th minute of action by Retha Koeford.

Howard was able to draw even in the 31st minute, as Cynthia Snyder picked-off a pass in Loyola's defensive third, and fired a shot from 12-yards out on the right side into the top of the net that put the game at 1-1.

The Greyhounds had the majority of the chances throughout the rest of the contest. Jessica Van Dyke had a quality opportunity near the end of the first half, but was stopped by a sliding save by Dickinson. Dickinson finished with 10 saves in the contest.

Howard's Jordan Brown came inches away from giving the Bison the lead five minutes into the second half, as she rang a shot off the post from eight yards out.

Nine different Greyhounds recorded shots in the contest, including Schiro, Miller, Brittany Yancey, Mangione, Rosy Hayes, Van Dyke, Kailey Rote and Melissa Lookingland.

Loyola next travels to Michigan State on Friday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m., followed by a match-up at Oakland on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 11:30 a.m.
