Cabrera Scores Twice As Women's Soccer Earns 3-1 Win At Mount St. Mary's
EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes of its 2016 season and added another early in the second half, en route to a 3-1 win over Mount St. Mary's at the Waldron Family Stadium Friday night.
In the sixth minute, senior Nicole Wahlig sent a cross from the right side into the small box. The Mountaineers tried to clear the ball, but sophomore Julianna Cabrera collected it sent a shot from seven yards out off the hands of Mount goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell and into the back of the net.
Cabrera had another scoring opportunity in the eighth minute, but Bunnell saved that attempt.
Freshman Maddie Hart then became the first rookie to score this season, breaking through in the 11th minute. She dodged and split defenders just inside the top right corner of the box before sending a left-footed shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
Through the first half, Loyola held a 7-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Five of the Greyhounds' seven first-half shots were put on goal.
Early in the second half, Cabrera netted her second goal, coming in the 51st minute, when she snuck a low shot into the left corner of the goal. The two tallies mark the first multi-goal game of Cabrera's career.
The Mount was able to break sophomore Sumer Rahe's scoreless streak in the 72nd minute when Dom Stauffer played a corner into the box. Neither team was able to control the ball before Noelle Defede one-touched it into the back of the net.
For the game, Loyola outshot Mount St. Mary's, 11-5, and held advantages in shots on goal, 7-3, and corner kicks, 5-2.
In her first career start, Rahe finished with two saves.
With the win, the Greyhounds move to 9-0-0 all-time against the Mount and 14-9-2 in season openers.
Loyola will head to Ridley Athletic Complex for its home opener on Sunday when the Greyhounds host crosstown rival UMBC at 4 p.m.
