Record Crowd Turns Out For 10th-Annual Diane Geppi-Aikens Event
Sept. 22, 2012
BALTIMORE - A record-setting crowd of 875 participants from the Baltimore area and the Loyola University Maryland community took part in the 10th-Annual Diane Geppi-Aikens 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Walk on a crisp Saturday morning that brought perfect running weather.
This year's race also featured the announcement of the first endowed scholarship for a female student-athlete at Loyola in Geppi-Aikens' name. Proceeds from the annual event will benefit the scholarship fund.
The energetic crowd set a record for the highest number of participants in the nine-year history of the event, eclipsing the 729 who participated last year. It is also the fifth-straight year the run has drawn more than 600 participants.
The race was held on the University's campus in honor of the Loyola women's lacrosse coach who passed away in 2003 after a brave battle with brain cancer.
In addition to many local road runners, family and friends of Geppi-Aikens, and Loyola athletics teams, women's lacrosse teams from Loyola, Maryland, UMBC, Johns Hopkins and Towson all ran or walked at the event.
