Aikens, Caldwell, Mathis Named To IWLCA Academic Honor Roll
BALTIMORE - Shannon Aikens, Taylor Caldwell and Bailey Mathis have been named to the IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Roll, while the Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team was honored as an All-Academic Team, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).
Aikens, is making her second straight-year appearance on the Academic Honor Roll. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Aikens graduated in May with a degree in speech pathology. Despite battling injury, the attacker played in 11 games throughout her career and finished with 10 goals, four assists and 14 points. As a senior in 2016, Aikens scored on all five shots she took, concluding the season with five goals, two assists and seven points.
Caldwell is a communications major from Oceanport, New Jersey, and is making her first appearance on the Academic Honor Roll. The junior goalkeeper played in four games in 2016, logging 35 minutes between the pipes. She turned back six shots for the year, including all three she saw against Holy Cross. She also scooped up two ground balls against the Crusaders.
Mathis, a first-team All-Patriot League defender in 2016, is a psychology major from Lake Worth, Florida. Carrying a 3.92 grade-point average, Mathis is making her first appearance on the Academic Honor Roll after being a repeat honoree on the 12-member Patriot League All-Academic Team. One of Loyola’s top match-up defenders, she held Bucknell’s Gretchen Richter, Colgate’s Haley O’Hanlon and Navy’s Katie Gallagher scoreless this season, while she concluded the year with 17 ground balls, 18 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers.
To be eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must be a junior, senior or graduate student and earn a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater.
As a team, Loyola was one of 85 schools nationally to earn the Academic Honor Squad distinction, meaning the squad carried a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the year.
