Gallagher Named Defender Of The Year; Paton Earns All-America Honors
May 25, 2012
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse senior Kellye Gallagher has been named the Defender of the Year by WomensLax.com, as announced Friday. In addition, Gallagher and sophomore Marlee Paton were two of 27 players from 13 different universities to earn All-America honors by WomensLax.com.
Gallagher and Paton join Syracuse’s Kailah Kempney, Alyssa Murray and Michelle Tumolo – WomensLax.com’s Attacker of the Year – as the only BIG EAST honorees.
This marks the first All-America honor for Gallagher, a first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honoree and the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. A two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and an all-tournament team selection this year, Gallagher led the league in both caused turnovers and ground balls per game, while she also ranked second nationally with 2.70 caused turnovers per game and fifth with 3.25 ground balls per game. The Ridley, Pa., native also broke Loyola’s single-season record for caused turnovers, racking up 54 this year, and ranks second in the program’s career records with 125.
Paton is also earning her first All-America honor. The BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, Paton led Loyola with 54 goals, 36 assists and 90 points this season. Her 4.50 points per game ranks third in the BIG EAST and 13th nationally, while it is also the second-best single-season point total in Loyola history. A native of Seaholme, Australia, Paton was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team this year, while she also earned all-tournament team honors and was twice named the league’s offensive player of the week. This marks the second-straight year Paton has been honored on the all-region team, while it is the first time she’s been voted to the first team.
Loyola wrapped up the year with a 14-6 record, including a school record 7-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Greyhounds won the BIG EAST title for the second year in a row and earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Championships for a second-consecutive season. In first round action, Loyola topped Penn, 10-9, in overtime, before falling at No. 3 Maryland, 17-11, in the quarterfinals.
