CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team swept the first week of Patriot League honors with junior Hannah Schmitt (offensive), redshirt junior Taryn VanThof (midfielder), sophomore Molly Wolf (defensive) and freshman Bailey Mathis (rookie) being recognized as the respective players of the week, announced Tuesday by the League.

Schmitt tied a career-best six goals, including five in the second half, to lead the Greyhounds to a 16-12 victory at No. 6 Virginia on Saturday. The Malvern, Pa., native tallied three goals in a 6-1 run that saw the Greyhounds turn a 5-2 deficit into an 8-6 lead early in the second half.  Her six goals marked her 15th career hat trick and ninth game with four points or more.

VanThof, from Livonia, N.Y., anchored Loyola’s midfield, recording her sixth career hat trick with three goals, and added a game-high six draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. She was the first Greyhound to score this season and also started the scoring in the second half, sparking a 10-2 run that put Loyola ahead for good.

Wolf made 11 saves in goal, including six in the first half to keep the Greyhounds within two, 5-3, at the break. A native of Baltimore, Wolf picked up her first win of the season and notched the fourth double-digit save game of her career.

Mathis played a key role defensively in her collegiate debut. Coming from Lake Worth, Fla., Mathis marked Courtney Swan, UVa’s top attacker, and held one of the nation’s top attackers to just four shots overall, including two which were free-position attempts. One of those shots came with just eight seconds remaining and once the Greyhounds’ victory was in hand.

These honors mark the first Patriot League weekly accolades for all four Greyhounds.

Loyola will return to action this weekend when it hosts No. 17 Princeton in its home opener on Saturday. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
