Women's Lax Ends Season In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament
May 12, 2013
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 11 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field, as the Greyhounds dropped an 19-9 contest to No. 3 seed North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Annie Thomas led the Greyhounds with five points on four goals and one assist, while junior Marlee Paton had four points on three goals and one assist. Senior Joanna Dalton and sophomore Taryn VanThof both chipped in a score each, while sophomore Sydney Thomas had one assist.
For North Carolina (15-3), Kara Cannizzaro had a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Abbey Friend added four goals and two assists for six points.
Sydney Thomas won the opening draw control and VanThof netted a goal on the possession, getting Loyola on the board first at 28:55. The Tar Heels responded with a string of five-straight scores by the 17:25 mark though, giving them a 5-1 advantage.
Annie Thomas broke the streak when she circled the crease and stuck a shot past UNC goalkeeper Megan Ward at 13:38. Dalton then made it two-straight Greyhounds goals, capitalizing on a fast-break opportunity after Paton won the draw, scoring 11 seconds after Thomas' goal to pull Loyola within two, 5-3.
North Carolina tallied a man-up goal at 9:40, but Loyola responded when VanThof drew a double team and Annie Thomas circled the crease for a score at 7:30.
Sydney Thomas then found Paton down the left side for a second-consecutive Loyola goal, bringing the Greyhounds within one, 6-5, with 7:05 left in the half.
Loyola was unable to find its equalizer though and the Tar Heels notched a goal with 45 seconds left before the break to take a 7-5 advantage into halftime.
Out of the intermission, North Carolina netted three-straight scores to extend its lead to five, at 10-5, before Paton was able to get Loyola on the board at 23:53. Paton's goal marked her 200th career point, making her just the seventh Greyhound to reach the milestone.
Paton then assisted Annie Thomas at 23:27 to bring Loyola within three, 10-7, at 23:27, but the Tar Heels responded with two of their own goals to stretch the lead back to five, 12-7.
Annie Thomas returned the favor to Paton for a score at 18:37, but seven-straight goals from North Carolina proved to be too much for the Greyhounds to overcome.
Loyola broke the streak on a free-position goal from Annie Thomas at 3:35, but the Tar Heels ran out the clock for the 19-9 victory.
Defensively, freshman Maddy Lesher scooped up five ground balls, while Paton had a team-high two caused turnovers.
Dalton finished the day with five draw controls and with three draws today, VanThof broke into the program's all-time top-10 career records with 105 throughout her first two seasons. She also finished the year ranked third in Loyola's single-season records with 75, one shy of tying the program record.
Loyola concludes the season with an 11-9 overall record. The senior class of Kathleen Barranco, Ashley Cahill, Cassandra Cursaro, Joanna Dalton, Jayne Jablonski and Ashley Moulton conclude their careers with a four-year record of 53-25, two BIG EAST Championships and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
