Comeback Falls Short For Women's Lax In BIG EAST Semifinals
May 2, 2013
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 12 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team fell just short of knocking off No. 8 Georgetown in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament at Multi-Sport Field Thursday night, but a late Hoya run put the tournament hosts on top, 16-14.
The third-seeded Greyhounds (10-8, 6-2 BIG EAST) rallied for six-straight goals to open the second half, giving them their first lead of the game at 10-9, but the second-seeded Hoyas (13-4, 6-2) tied the score three more times before a five-goal run put them ahead for good.
Sophomore Annie Thomas led the way for Loyola with four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Kara Burke had a team-high three goals, marking her fourth hat trick this year. Junior Marlee Paton and sophomores Hannah Schmitt and Taryn VanThof tacked on two goals each, while seniors Cassandra Cursaro and Joanna Dalton, in addition to sophomore Sydney Thomas, all had one goal.
The Greyhounds started out the game scoring on their first two offensive possessions, but found themself trailing Georgetown, 4-1, by the 21:56 mark. The Hoyas tallied the first two goals of the contest before Paton found Burke for Loyola's first goal at 25:42. Georgetown tacked on two more goals before Annie Thomas came around the back of the goal and pulled the goalie out of the cage to score on an open net.
Three-straight scores from the Hoyas gave them a 7-2 advantage at 15:23, but Sydney Thomas fired a free position shot into the goal and three minutes later, Schmitt sent a laser shot into the back of the net, bringing Loyola within three, 7-4, with 9:01 to play in the half.
Georgetown's goal at 5:16 proved to be the final goal of the first frame, as the Hoyas took an 8-4 advantage into the break.
Another Georgetown goal to open the second half gave the Hoyas their largest lead of the game, 9-4, but the Greyhounds rallied for six-straight goals by the 15:51 mark to take their first lead of the game, 10-9.
Schmitt started the streak when she won the draw control and dodged defenders to score while crossing the face of the cage. Cursaro and VanThof added tallies before Dalton won a ground ball at the restraining line and heaved it up field to Burke, who went one-on-one with Georgetown goalkeeper Barb Black, scoring at 23:29.
Thomas then netted the tying goal at 21:52.
After over five minutes of scoreless action, Paton drew a charge, ran the length of the field and dodged through defenders before finding the back of the net for the go-ahead goal at 15:51.
Free position goals from the Hoyas and Paton moved the score to 11-10, while two Georgetown goals sandwiched around one from Burke knotted the score for a third time, at 12-12.
Georgetown broke the stalemate with a goal at 7:47 and the Hoyas didn't look back as they strung together five-straight scores to take a 16-12 advantage at the 3:26 mark.
VanThof and Dalton scored within 42 seconds of each other to pull the Greyhounds within two with 2:02 to play, but the Hoyas ran the clock out to hold on for the 16-14 victory.
Defensively, Paton had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while VanThof tied a career-high with a game-high eight draw controls.
The Greyhounds will now await Sunday night's selection show to find out if they have been selected to participate in the 2013 NCAA Championships. The show is set to air on NCAA.com at 9 p.m.
