Defense Leads Women's Lax To 13-7 Win Over UConn On Senior Day
April 28, 2013
BALTIMORE - Behind a solid defensive effort and 11 saves by freshman goalkeeper Molly Wolf, the No. 12 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team earned a 13-7 win over No. 17 Connecticut on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex. The win gives the Greyhounds their 10th of the season, marking their fifth-straight 10-win season, as they close out the regular season with a 10-7 overall record and 6-2 mark in BIG EAST play.
Junior Marlee Paton and sophomore Kara Burke led the offense with three goals and one assist each, while senior Cassandra Cursaro and sophomore Annie Thomas chipped in two goals apiece. Senior Joanna Dalton and sophomores Sydney Thomas and Taryn VanThof all had one score, and senior Ashley Cahill rounded out the scoring with one assist.
For Connecticut (13-2, 5-2 BIG EAST), Lauren Kahn led the way with three goals.
The game started as a defensive battle, as neither team was able to find the back of the net until Burke's free position goal at 12:27. VanThof then tacked on a second-straight free position goal for the Greyhounds at 6:27.
The score looked to be 2-0 heading into halftime, but junior Katherine Reinhard scooped up the ground ball after the Huskies' turnover in the final 30 seconds and found Sydney Thomas, who assisted Burke for the score with 13 seconds remaining. The score sent Loyola into the intermission with a 3-0 advantage and marked the fourth time this season the Greyhounds have shutout an opponent in a half.
Connecticut rallied for the first score of the second half, scoring at 27:58, but Paton netted her first of the game 40 seconds later to spark a three-goal run for Loyola. Annie Thomas assisted Burke at 23:02 and VanThof assisted Cursaro at 20:44 to push Loyola ahead, 6-1.
The Huskies were the next to score, notching a goal out of a timeout, but Burke gave up a free position attempt to assist Annie Thomas, wide open on the crease, before Paton added a second goal to make the score 8-2 at 16:23.
Loyola gave up the next goal, a free position shot, but answered with a string of three straight, from Annie Thomas, Paton and Dalton, to extend its lead to 11-3 with just over eight minutes to play.
Connecticut netted the next two goals, before Sydney Thomas and Cursaro closed out Loyola's scoring with goals at 2:45 and 2:22, respectively.
Two more from the Huskies brought the final tally to 13-7.
Defensively, Paton led the way with six caused turnovers and three ground balls, while freshman Maddy Lesher earned a career-high five ground balls. VanThof also added four ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls
Loyola will be the No. 3 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament. The Greyhounds will face second-seeded Georgetown on Thursday at approximately 7:30 p.m., at Georgetown's Multi-Sport Complex in Washington, DC. Top-seeded Syracuse will face No. 4 seed Connecticut at 5:30 p.m.
