April 26, 2013
BALTIMORE - Despite dropping a 19-9 contest to No. 5 Syracuse at Ridley Athletic Complex Friday night, the No. 12 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team earned a spot in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament.
The Greyhounds (9-7, 5-2 BIG EAST) will join Syracuse (12-3, 7-0), Georgetown (12-3, 6-1) and Connecticut (13-2, 5-2) in next week's four-team tournament, marking the third-straigth year that Loyola has advanced to the conference championships. The Greyhounds' game vs. No. 17 Connecticut on Sunday will determine seedings for the tournament.
In tonight's contest versus Syracuse, sophomore Taryn VanThof led the way, scoring three goals. Junior Marlee Paton also had three points, contributing two goals and one assist, while senior Joanna Dalton tacked on two goals. Sophomore Hannah Schmitt and freshman Katrina Geiger both contributed one score and sophomores Annie Thomas and Sydney Thomas added an assist each.
Behind five goals from Kayla Treanor, Syracuse (12-3, 7-0) clinched at least a portion of the regular-season BIG EAST title. Alyssa Murray recorded a game-high five assists to go with three goals for the Orange and Kailah Kempney had a hat trick with three goals.
Syracuse was unstoppable to begin the game, scoring on its first nine shots to take a 9-2 advantage by the 12:37 mark. The Orange scored the first two goals of the game within one minute of each other before VanThof converted a free position shot at the 23-minute mark.
Syracuse then scattered six more scores within the next six minutes to pull ahead 8-1. VanThof scored again at 13:55, assisted by Paton, but two more Orange goals gave them a 10-2 advantage.
Paton netted the next goal, and although Syracuse won the ensuing draw control, junior Katherine Reinhard caused a turnover and Annie Thomas picked up the loose ball. From there, it was all Schmitt as she dodged and split through four defenders en route to goal for the score at 6:06. Dalton, assisted by Thomas, capped a three-goal run for the Greyhounds at 4:28, bringing the score to 10-5.
The Orange scored one final time before the intermission, bringing the halftime score to 10-6.
Out of the break, VanThof scored first, but Syracuse netted five of the next six to extend its lead to 16-7 with under 11 minutes to play. Geiger scored on a free position shot to halt the streak, but the Orange finished the game by tallying three of the final four scores to earn the 19-9 victory.
The Greyhounds will close out the regular season on Sunday, hosting UConn for Senior Day. Prior to the start of the game, Kathleen Barranco, Ashley Cahill, Cassandra Cursaro, Joanna Dalton, Jayne Jablonski and Ashley Moulton will be honored. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
