Greyhounds Remain Undefeated In BIG EAST, Top Rutgers
April 20, 2012
BALTIMORE - The No. 14 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team remained undefeated in BIG EAST play Friday night, knocking off Rutgers, 15-11, at Ridley Athletic Complex. With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 9-4 on the season and 5-0 in conference play, while Rutgers falls to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the league.
Sophomore Marlee Paton led the Greyhounds by tying a career-high nine points on five goals and four assists, marking her 19th-straight game with a goal. Junior Joanna Dalton and freshmen Hannah Schmitt and Annie Thomas also notched hat tricks for Loyola, each registering three goals. In addition, Thomas tacked on two assists to tie a career-high five points and Janet Eisenhut's freshman record from 1980 for assists in a season with 19.
Rounding out the scoring tonight were freshmen Kara Burke, Molly Hulseman and Sydney Thomas. Hulseman had one goal, while Thomas had two assists and Burke dished out one helper.
Rutgers was led by Ali Steinberg and Lauren Sbrilli's three goals each, while Stephanie Anderson and Brittany Davis each contributed two goals.
The Greyhounds found themselves in a hole to begin the first half, as they gave up the first four goals of the game. Loyola snapped the streak though when Burke passed to Dalton at the top of the arc, who fired a shot into the back of the net at 17:25.
Loyola made it two-straight scores 16 seconds later. Hulseman won the draw control and set it up so that Paton could assist Schmitt for a goal at 17:09.
Schmitt notched her second-consecutive score at the 13:59 mark to bring the Greyhounds within one, at 4-3.
Rutgers scored a man-advantage goal at 12:47 to increase its lead back to two, but Paton tallied her 100th career point with a goal at 12:30, assisted by Annie Thomas, to get Loyola back within one, at 5-4.
The Scarlet Knights would find the back of the net for a sixth time at 11:13, but goals from Schmitt and Annie Thomas within 17 seconds tied the game at six with 8:08 to play in the half.
Rutgers would score its seventh goal on an open net when senior goalkeeper Kerry Stoothoff was called for a foul outside of the goal. The Scarlet Knights then tacked on a second-straight goal at 3:39 to take an 8-6 advantage.
Loyola answered with two-consecutive goals of its own - from Paton and Dalton - within 36 seconds to tie the score for the second time, at 8-8, with 2:05 on the clock.
Rutgers regained its lead with 55 seconds to play in the half, but Dalton won the ensuing draw control and the Greyhounds used a series of passes and great stick work to enable Paton to find Annie Thomas open in front of the net. Thomas stuck a shot into the top corner to give the Greyhounds their equalizer just 41 seconds before halftime, sending the teams into the break tied at nine.
The Scarlet Knights quickly jumped back out in front with a goal 29 seconds into the second half, but back-to-back scores gave Loyola its first lead of the game, 11-10, with 17:27 to play. Dalton converted a free position shot at 27:20 to tie the game, before Hulseman gave the Greyhounds the lead for good with a goal - assisted by Paton.
Paton then tacked on two-unanswered goals for the Greyhounds to push Loyola ahead 13-10 at the 9:07 mark.
Defensively, senior Ana Heneberry led the way with three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while classmate Kellye Gallagher won a career-high five draw controls and junior Joanna Dalton finished the gam ewith four.
Loyola will close out the home portion of its regular season on Sunday when it hosts Villanova at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, Loyola's senior class of Kellye Gallagher, Ana Heneberry, Kerry Stoothoff and Virginia Weber will be honored as a part of Senior Day.
