Thomas Ties Assist Record As Women's Lax Wins At Villanova
April 19, 2013
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore Annie Thomas tied Rita Ciletti's 27-year-old program record for assists in a game, dishing out seven Friday afternoon, to lead the No. 13 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 16-11 win at Villanova.
Thomas had a hand in seven of Loyola's first 12 goals, including the go-ahead score in the first half, to record a career-high seven points, tying her with Ciletti among Loyola's single-game leaders. Ciletti had seven assists in a 30-7 win over Bucknell on April 7, 1986.
Junior Marlee Paton also tacked on five points to break into the top-10 of Loyola's career points, as she now sits 10th with 180.
Sophomore Hannah Schmitt and Paton both had hat tricks for the Greyhounds (8-6, 4-1 BIG EAST), scoring three goals each, while senior Joanna Dalton and sophomore Kara Burke tacked on two scores. Senior Ashley Cahill, juniors Molly Dickerson and Ali Habicht, and sophomores Sydney Thomas and Taryn VanThof rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
Villanova (5-8, 0-5) was led by Maria Bowman's game-high four goals and Jackie Froccaro's three scores.
Villanova struck first, but Burke got the Greyhounds on the board at the 27:03 mark. Annie Thomas then found Paton to put Loyola ahead for good, 2-1, at 26:27.
From there, Burke, Dalton and Schmitt scored to give Loyola a 5-1 advantage, before Dalton's second score at 19:26 capped off a six-goal Greyhound run.
The Wildcats halted the streak with back-to-back goals, but Schmitt tallied her second, assisted by Cahill, at 9:03, to put Loyola ahead 7-3. Cahill was then credited for a goal when a pass deflected off a defenders stick and slipped into the goal.
Two more Villanova scores pulled the Wilcats within three, at 8-5, but Annie Thomas and Paton connected twice within the final three minutes to give Loyola a 10-5 halftime edge.
Out of the break, Annie Thomas assisted Schmitt and VanThof, respectively, to put Loyola ahead, 12-5. Sydney Thomas and Habicht then notched scores to give the Greyhounds their largest lead of the game, 14-5.
Villanova recorded two-straight scores in a little over four minutes, but Dickerson netted her second goal of the year and Aikens notched her first career goal to maintain Loyola's advantage.
The Wildcats responded with four goals to close out the game, but Loyola held on for the 16-11 victory.
For the game, 11 of Loyola's 16 goals were assisted, while 10 different Greyhounds accounted for the 16 goals.
Defensively, 12 Greyhounds scooped up ground balls, with Paton, VanThof and freshman goalkeeper Molly Wolf leading the way with two each. Paton and VanThof also had two caused turnovers.
In goal, Wolf stopped three shots, while sophomore Natalia Angelo had two.
Loyola will return to action on Sunday when it heads to Rutgers for a 1 p.m., contest.
