VanThof Breaks Records In Women's Lacrosse Win Over American
April 9, 2014
BALTIMORE - Redshirt junior Taryn VanThof won nine draw controls in an 18-5 win over American Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex to become the Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse program's new career and single season record holder.
With 77 draw controls this season, VanThof passed Rita Ciletti and Michelle Meyer at the top of the record boards, as Ciletti set the single-season mark at 76 in 1984 and Meyer tied it in 1994. VanThof also bettered Meyer's all-time career record of 180 draw controls from 1993-97, as she has now won 182 throughout her first three seasons.
With the win, Loyola earned its 25th 10-win season in program history and sixth-straight under head coach Jen Adams. The Greyhounds are also on an eight-game win streak and have improved to 6-0 in Patriot League play. American fell to 4-11 on the season and 0-6 in League play.
Senior Marlee Paton, junior Sydney Thomas and sophomore Maddy Blakeman all recorded hat tricks for the Greyhounds, contributing three goals each. Paton added two assists for five points, while junior Annie Thomas had a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Senior Ali Habicht and junior Hannah Schmitt added two goals each and juniors Elizabeth Barranco, Molly Hulseman and VanThof tacked on one each. Freshman Cami Whiteford tallied a personal-best two assists and senior Molly Dickerson added one helper.
Five Eagles scored for American, with Madison Hoon, Alex Lugovina, Emily Maher, Olivia Mangan and Jessica Wojciechowski accounting for the goals.
VanThof won the opening draw control and went straight to goal, scoring 10 seconds into play. American knotted the score at 1-1 at the 26:52 mark, but Loyola would scatter nine-straight goals throughout a 16-minute span to take a 10-1 advantage by the 10:39 mark. Annie Thomas assisted four of the goals and scored one of her own, while Habicht, Sydney Thomas and Paton accounted for two goals each in the run. Schmitt, and Blakeman accounted for the other two scores.
Back-to-back goals from the Eagles at 8:18 and 7:23 halted the run, but Hulseman scored the final goal of the half to bring the halftime score to 11-3.
Maher scored the first goal out of the break for American, but Paton completed her 27th career hat trick at the 25-minute mark to move the score to 12-4. Blakeman added her second of the game, assisted by Annie Thomas, at 19:47 and then Thomas scored on a feed from Paton at 17:17 to give the Greyhounds a 10-goal advantage, 14-4.
The Eagles scored their final goal of the game at 10:20, converting a free position shot, and Sydney Thomas, Schmitt, Blakeman and Barranco closed out the game with a goal each. Thomas' goal at 8:06 marked her first hat trick of the season, while Blakeman's score at 4:57 marked her second career hat trick.
In goal, sophomore Molly Wolf stopped seven shots. Paton helped defensively, finishing with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Habicht also added two caused turnovers, while senior Katherine Reinhard and freshman goalkeeper Taylor Caldwell finished the game with two ground balls each.
Loyola will look to extend its win streak on Saturday when it heads to Boston University. The game between the Patriot League newcomers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
