Thomas' Four Goals Not Enough As Loyola Falls To No. 9 Georgetown
April 6, 2013
BALTIMORE - In a game that featured eight tie scores and four lead changes, sophomore Annie Thomas' season-high four goals were not enough for the No. 15 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team, as No. 9 Georgetown scored four of the final five goals to escape with a 14-11 win at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Thomas' four goals led seven Greyhounds in scoring, as senior Joanna Dalton and sophomore Hannah Schmitt both scored twice and junior Cassandra Cursaro, junior Marlee Paton and sophomore Kara Burke all chipped in one score. Sophomore Sydney Thomas contributed two assists for Loyola (5-6, 2-1 BIG EAST).
For Georgetown (8-2, 3-0), Sophia Thomas led the way with four goals, while Kelyn Freedman had a game-high five points on two goals and three assists.
Despite falling behind 2-0, the Greyhounds scattered three goals within five minutes to take their first lead, 3-2, at 14:59. Burke and Schmitt tallied goals for the Greyhounds before Wolf stopped a point-blank shot and cleared it to Burke on the far restraining line. Burke found Sydney Thomas in the middle of the field, who drew a defender before dishing a pass to Annie Thomas for the go-ahead goal.
Annie Thomas then tacked on a second-straight score at 11:10 to give Loyola a 4-2 advantage.
The Hoyas responded with three-straight goals by the 7:44 mark to regain the lead, 5-4, but a series of free position goals sent both teams into the break tied at six. Cursaro had evened the game at five with a goal at 5:38, before Georgetown tallied a free position goal at 3:02. Dalton then converted her attempt with 1:23 left in the half.
Georgetown looked to have the first opportunity of the second half, but senior Ashley Moulton caused a turnover to send the ball the other way. Schmitt ran the length of the field with it before sticking a shot in the top corner to give Loyola a 7-6 lead.
The Hoyas answered at 26:31, but Annie Thomas won the ensuing draw at the restraining line and went 1-on-1 with Barb Black before sticking a shot in the top corner to keep Loyola on top, 8-7.
Back-to-back Georgetown goals pushed the Hoyas ahead for the first time in the half, 9-8, with 24:04 to play, but Dalton's free position goal at 22:47 evened the score for a seventh time, at nine.
Paton again knotted the score at 10 with 20:27 on the clock, after a Georgetown goal at 22:01, but that would be the last time the game would be even, as the Hoyas answered with four of the game's final five goals to escape with the 14-11 victory.
Defensively, freshman Katrina Geiger and Paton finished the game with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Moulton had two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
Dalton won a game-high five draw controls, while Geiger earned four.
Loyola will return to action next weekend when it heads to undefeated and sixth-ranked Notre Dame for a Friday night game. The Greyhounds will remain on the road for its first-ever game at Marquette on Sunday. Game times are set for 7 p.m., and noon, respectively.
