Paton Records 100th Goal And 150th Point In Loss At No. 2 Florida
March 5, 2013
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior Marlee Paton scored her 100th career goal and 150th career point on Tuesday, but it wouldn’t be enough as the ninth-ranked Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team fell to the No. 2 Florida Gators, 16-7, at Donald R. Dizney Lacrosse Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Greyhounds rallied for three-straight goals at the beginning of the second half to pull within one, 8-7, but the Gators answered with a string of eight-straight goals to close out the game and remain undefeated this season.
Sophomore Sydney Thomas (1 goal, 2 assists) and Paton (2g, 1a) led Loyola (2-3 overall) with three points each, while senior Joanna Dalton and sophomore Hannah Schmitt both tallied two goals. Sophomores Annie Thomas and Taryn VanThof contributed one assist each.
For Florida (8-0), Kitty Cullen notched five goals, while Brittany Dashiell and Shannon Gilroy both had three goals.
The Gators tallied three goals early in the first half before Dalton was able to get Loyola on the board at 25:55. Paton assisted the shot to record her 150th career point, becoming the 18th Greyhound to reach the milestone.
Dalton then tacked on a second-straight score, converting a free position shot at 20:17, but Florida would string together another three-straight goals for a 6-2 advantage at the 13:40 mark.
Annie Thomas found Paton almost one minute later, but Florida responded with a man-up goal at 9:39 to stretch its lead back to four, 7-3, with 9:39 to play in the half.
After almost eight scoreless minutes, Paton took control of a ball in the midfield and sent it ahead to Sydney Thomas who beat a defender and the Gators’ keeper for the final goal of the half, at 1:11, bringing the score to 7-4 at the break.
Florida started the scoring in the second half, but Schmitt knocked down a Gator pass on the next draw and Paton scooped up the loose ball before finding Sydney Thomas wide open in front of the goal. Thomas gave it back to Paton, who beat Meager for the score – and for her 100th career goal – at 28:03. With the goal, Paton became the ninth Greyhound with both 100 goals and 50 assists throughout their career.
VanThof won the ensuing draw control, which Schmitt turned into a goal just eight seconds later, at 27:53, bringing the score to 8-6.
A second-straight goal for Schmitt, following a Florida timeout and turnover, pulled the Greyhounds within one. Meager sent a ball out of bounds on a clear attempt, which Paton recovered and sent to Sydney Thomas in front of the goal, who gave it up to a streaking Schmitt for a score at 27:04.
Florida broke Loyola’s momentum though, firing two goals into the back of the net within 25 seconds and added a third on a free position shot at 20:26, as the Gators extended their lead back to four, 11-7.
After over 10 scoreless minutes, the Gators stretched the defense and tallied two more goals by the 7:21 mark to extend their lead to six, 13-7, and scattered three more goals throughout the remaining seven minutes to earn the 16-7 victory.
In goal, freshman Molly Wolf earned six saves.
Loyola will return to action on Wednesday, March 13 when it closes out its three-game road swing with a game at Delaware. Opening draw is slated for 6 p.m.
