Baltimore, Md. - North Carolina's Meg Freshwater scored the deciding goal with 3:03 on the clock for a 9-8 victory over Loyola Friday afternoon on Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. The Greyhounds fall to 1-1 on the season while the Tarheels improve to 3-1.

The Tarheels opened scoring just over nine minutes into the contest with Stephanie Scuarachio's unassisted goal. Loyola answered quickly as Sydney Greene scored back to back goals for a 2-1 lead. Greene rolled the crease and beat the keeper for her first goal at 10:10. Rachel Shuck fed Greene from the 12 as she was charging the cage for the second goal 12:21 into the game. UNC's Jess Allen tied things at two when she rebounded Erica LaGrow's free position shot 16:32 into the game. The Greyhounds again went up two with Shuck becoming the playmaker on both scores. The first was an unassisted by Shuck at 18:58 while she assisted on Maura Kenny's goal at 21:38 for the 4-2 lead. North Carolina worked hard over the final five minutes of the half to again tie the game at 4 at the half. Alison Higgins goal at 25:41 and Christina Juras at 27:03 tied the contest 4-4.

The Greyhounds opened the second half with a 3-0 goal run in just over five minutes. Kenny scored the first for the 5-4 lead at 3:26 and Shuck the second, both unassisted at 5:07 for a 6-4 mark. Kenny quickly added a third as she picked up the draw control and beat nearly everyone down field. Kenny's third goal gave Loyola a 7-4 lead at 35:16. The Tarheels would hold Loyola scoreless over the next 20 minutes as they scored four goals to claim an 8-7 lead. Katie Brooks, Jenn Cook, LaGraw and Jess Allen all scored for UNC in that time frame. Cook and LaGraw's goals were of free-positions. Freshman Kate Filippelli scored the goal to tie things at eight when Shuck fed her the ball inside the eight meter at 56:42. But it would be Freshwater's goal at 56:57 that would make the difference in the 9-8 win for UNC. Freshwater crashed the cage running right for the goal.

 

 

Loyola was led in scoring by Shuck with two goals and three assists while Kenny led in goals with three. Greene added two goals and Filippelli one.

Allen led the Tarheels in scoring with two goals and an assist. Freshwater and Higgines both recorded a goal and an assist.

Greyhound keepers Kim Lawton and Cindy Nicolaus tallied 17 saves with Lawton stopping eight shots in the first and Nicolaus with nine saves in the second. UNC's Kristen Hordy recorded nine saves.

Loyola is back at Geppi-Aikens Field on Sunday, March 6 as they host Hofstra at 1:00 p.m.
