Greyhounds Fall In Season Opener At Virginia, 14-9

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 7 Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener at No. 10 Virginia Saturday afternoon, 14-9.
Freshman Hannah Schmitt led the Greyhounds (0-1) in her collegiate debut with three goals, while junior Cass Cursaro and sophomore Marlee Paton added two each. Freshmen Molly Hulseman and Annie Thomas rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
For Virginia (1-0), Ainsley Baker led the way with five goals, while Josie Owen had seven points on one goal and six assists.
Virginia found the back of the net first, taking a 2-0 lead behind goals from Courtney Swan and Baker, before Loyola was able to get on the board at 27:22 with a goal from Cursaro, assisted by Paton.
The Cavaliers maintained their lead with another goal at 24:42, before Paton found the back of the net at 17:46. Schmitt then notched back-to-back scores within 33 seconds of each other – including the first of her career at 16:42 – to give Loyola its first lead, 4-3, at 16:09.
Back-to-back goals from Virginia pushed the Cavaliers ahead again, 5-4, with 7:45 to play in the first half, but Loyola was able to even it up again with Thomas’ first collegiate goal at the 6:24 mark.
A goal from Owen with 57 seconds on the clock gave Virginia a 6-5 lead heading into halftime.
Out of the break, Owen assisted Baker for three-straight goals to give the Cavaliers a 9-5 advantage with 19:50 to play.
Liza Blue scored for the Cavaliers at 17:46 and then back-to-back goals from Charlie Finnigan gave Virginia a 12-5 lead with 10:07 to play.
Hulseman halted the streak for the Greyhounds, firing her first collegiate goal into the back of the net at the 9:34, before Schmitt converted her first-ever hat trick at the 8:57 mark.
Another goal from the Cavaliers gave them a 13-7 lead at 7:28 and Cursaro converted a free position shot at 3:02 to move the score to 13-8. Slater then scored on an open net for UVa, before a free position goal from Paton brought the final score to 14-9.
Defensively, Paton had three caused turnovers, while senior Kellye Gallagher, senior Kerry Stoothoff and sophomore Katherine Reinhard each had three ground balls. Hulseman also won four draw controls for the Greyhounds.
In goal, Stoothoff came up with seven saves for Loyoa, while Kim Kolarik stopped 11 shots for Virginia.
Loyola will have next week off before heading down the street to face Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Feb. 29. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
