Aug. 15, 2012

Former Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball standout Miriam McKenzie has signed a contract to play for the Kotka Peli-Karhut basketball team in Finland, becoming the fifth player in head coach Joe Logan’s tenure to ink an overseas contract.

McKenzie finished her career fourth on the Loyola all-time scoring list with 1,398 points and seventh on the all-time rebounding list with 722 rebounds. She was just the second player in Greyhound history to be named to the All-MAAC First team in three-straight seasons.

The Columbia, Md., native was a part of one of the most successful teams in Loyola women’s basketball history in 2010-11, helping the Greyhounds to a 21-13 overall record and a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The program won its first-ever postseason game with a win over Old Domionion.

Kotka Peli-Karhut went 20-8 last season and made it to the semifinals of the league playoff.

McKenzie joins Erica DiClemente, Vika Sholokhova, Siobhan Prior and current Greyhound assistant coach Jill Glessner as Greyhounds who have continued their basketball careers professionally. Glessner spent time in England and Norway and DiClemente had a stint in the Czech Republic. Sholokhova and Prior are still currently playing. Sholokhova is playing for BK Dynamo in Moscow, Russia, while Prior is playing for the Nottingham Wildcats in England.
