Three Loyola University Maryland basketball players earned 2011-12 National All-Jesuit honors, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. Women’s basketball junior Katie Sheahin was named to the All-Jesuit Team, while senior teammate Miriam McKenzie and men’s basketball junior Erik Etherly earned honorable mention nods.

Sheahin was one of ten players to be named to the National All-Jesuit Team, and the only Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player to earn the honor. The Brookeville, Md., native was an All-MAAC First Team honoree while being named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season. She led Loyola in scoring at 15.1 points per game and ranked tenth in the nation at 3.4 steals per game.

Also an All-MAAC First Team selection, McKenzie joined Fairfield’s Taryn Johnson as the only MAAC players to earn honorable mention accolades. McKenzie finished second in the MAAC in rebounding at 8.4 boards per game, and was second on the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game. The senior finished her career at Loyola ranked fourth all-time in scoring with 1,398 career points.

Etherly helped lead the men’s team to the 2012 MAAC Championship title and was named the tournament MVP. He led the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game, and rebounding at 7.5 rebounds per game.

The All-Jesuit Team represents student-athletes from 28 Jesuit colleges spread across the United States that play basketball on all three levels of the NCAA and also in the NAIA. They share the mission of Jesuit education, founded nearly 500 years ago under the principles of St. Ignatius Loyola to educate young people to become men and women dedicated to service and compassionate leadership. Students at Jesuit colleges have long excelled in the classroom and in the community, but they also have played a major role in collegiate basketball in the last 100 years.
