Loyola-Bucknell Women's Basketball - Patriot League Championships Quarterfinals - 3/6/17
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland women's basketball tied Bucknell University four times in the final quarter, but the top-seeded Bison did not allow the Greyhounds to pull in front, and they got out of the Patriot League Championships Quarterfinals with a 75-72 victory Monday night in Sojka Pavilion.
Bucknell (25-5) led 57-52 going into the final 10 minutes, but Stephanie Karcz hit two free throws and Lauren Daugherty knocked down a three in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, and the Greyhounds (11-20) were even for the first time since there were seven minutes, 11 seconds left before halftime.
After Daugherty's three at 9:09 in the fourth, Megan McGurk scored on a driving layup from the right side, but Bri Betz-White hit a pull-up jumper at 8:16, and the score was tied at 59-59.
The Bison, who won the Patriot League regular-season title, scored in the paint their next two times down the court to go up four, but another Betz-White basket at 6:59 and a free-throw line jumper by Daugherty 33 ticks later tied the game at 63-63.
Kyl English, however, knocked down a 3-pointer for Bucknell at 6:02, and the margin was three. English then had another basket rattle in at 4:14, stretching the Bison lead to five, 68-63.
Daugherty responded for Loyola, catching a Karcz pass to score in the paint at 3:56, pulling the Greyhounds within three, 68-65. Loyola then forced a Bucknell turnover, and Molly Taylor drained a three at 3:22, knotting the game at 68-68.
Bucknell, however, got a three from Sune Swart 31 seconds later, and the Bison pushed ahead, 71-68. The Greyhounds misfired in the paint, and Swart came away with the rebound for Bucknell leading to an English basket at 1:51, making the advantage five.
Betz-White drew Loyola back within three at 1:28; she then had a steal for the Greyhounds and converted in the paint to make it a one-point game, 73-72. The teams traded missed 3-pointers before Kaitlyn Slagus hit two free throws for Bucknell with 3.2 seconds left.
Daugherty led all players with 25 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots, while Betz-White had 18 points, five boards and six assists. Karcz scored 13 and Taylor added 11.
Swart paced the Bison with 20 points, and Claire DeBoer added 13.
Bucknell led in the early-going of the first quarter, but Loyola closed the frame on a 7-1 run to lead, 18-13, at the end of the opening stanza. The Bison came back quickly, however, to tie the game at 18-18 on a Swart three just 1:22 into the second.
They led 34-31 at halftime, but a 7-0 run in the third quarter led to a 47-37 Bucknell lead at 5:30 in the third.
