Therien Earns League-Best Sixth Rookie Of The Week Award
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
Loyola University Maryland freshman Isabella Therien has been named the final Patriot League Rookie of the Week selection for the 2017-18 season, as announced by the League office Monday. Therien concluded the award season by earning six of the last eight awards to finish with a League-best six honors this year.
Sophomore Alexis Gray was also named to the Patriot League Honorable Mention performances for her play in Loyola's 65-52 win over Boston University in the regular-season finale Wednesday night.
Therien, the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, finished with 15 points against the Terriers to mark the 23rd time in 25 appearances this season that she's contributed double digits in points. Despite getting into foul trouble in the third quarter, the guard from Marlton, New Jersey, returned to the game midway through the fourth quarter and knocked down a 3-pointer that helped spark a 14-3 run that broke open an even 43-43 game. Therien's pair of free throws capped off the run and gave Loyola a 11-point advantage, 57-46, with 1:33 to play in the game.
Therien leads the Greyhounds in scoring this season and ranks fourth in the Patriot League with 15.1 points per game. That average also ranks sixth nationally among all freshmen in the NCAA this year.
Gray led all players with a game-high 19 points in the game, helping Loyola avenge its loss to Boston University earlier this season. A guard from Clarksburg, Maryland, Gray knocked down four 3-pointers and converted nine free throws in the final two minutes to help the Greyhounds secure the six seed and first-round bye in the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
With four treys, Gray moved her already single-season school record for 3-pointers made to 63. She's ranked tied for second in the Patriot League in 3-point field goals made this season.
Loyola will open play in the Patriot League Tournament tonight, as they face third-seeded Navy at Alumni Hall. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
