Loyola University Maryland women’s basketball freshman Izzy Therien has been named The Rock Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the League office Monday. Sophomore Stephanie Karcz was also included on the League’s honorable mention performances for the week.

Therien, a forward from Marlton, New Jersey, averaged 38.3 minutes of playing time through a three-game week for the Greyhounds, contributing 14.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. She also converted 13 of 14 free throws for the week, and added six assists and three steals in the three contests.

In the win over Holy Cross on Monday, Therien finished with 18 points, including going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, and added two assists and three steals in the game. She followed that up with a game-high 19 points against American on Thursday, including contributing a personal-best seven free throws, while she had six points and four assists at Lafayette on Sunday.

The top-ranked rookie in the Patriot League in scoring, Therien is second on the team and eighth in the League with 13.8 points per game. In 12 games, she’s reached double figures in scoring 10 times, including connecting on 10 field goals for a personal-best 21 points against Army West Point on January 2. She also has career-highs of seven rebounds at Boston University (January 5), five assists vs. Army West Point and three steals against Holy Cross.

Karcz, a four-time The Rock Rookie of the Week in 2016-17, earned Player of the Week honorable mention status after posting a double-double of 18.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game through three contests last week. The guard from Red Bank, New Jersey, poured in 21 points and grabbed a then-career-high 19 rebounds against Holy Cross to mark the most boards for a Greyhound since Patty Stoffey also had 19 in 1991. Karcz bettered that mark in the next game, setting the program’s NCAA Division I record for rebounds in a game at 21, and added 12 points for her fourth-straight double-double. She finished the week with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds at Lafayette on Sunday.

For the season, Karcz is ranked fourth in the Patriot League in scoring, (15.3 points per game), second in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and first in steals (55). In conference only games, she’s the only League player averaging a double-double, as she is seventh in points (14.3) and first in rebounds (14.8) per game.

The Greyhounds will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bucknell for a 6 p.m. tipoff and Sojka Pavillion.
