Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to LIU

Baltimore, Md. - Despite three players in double figures and a double-double by Lauren Troupe, the Loyola College women's basketball team was unable to get by Long Island University, 71-65 Thursday night at Reitz Arena. It was just the second home game of the year for the Greyhounds who with the loss fall to 2-8. The Blackbirds improve to 5-4 on the season.
Loyola led for the first six minutes of the contest before LIU went on a 7-0 run to claim a 15-10 lead 12:10. The Blackbirds nailed two of their eight three pointers in that run. Troupe answered back with a three of her own to spark a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead at 17-15 with 8:53 to play in the first half. The squads traded the advantage back and forth before a three-point basket by Masa Susic put LIU up 26-21 at 5:54. Loyola got back within two after two-free throws by Krystle Harrington but the Blackbirds would outscore the Greyhounds 12-4 to close the half. That run included a three by Amber Wirth with just four seconds remaining on the clock for the 40-30 halftime score.
In the second half, Long Island used solid shooting, with two threes by Wirth to get ahead by as much as 13 with 10:04 remaining before Loyola charged a comeback. The Greyhounds went on a 13-5 run, sparked by Jackie Valderas who scored all five of her points in that stretch for a 59-54 LIU lead at 5:23. After exchanging baskets, the Greyhounds charged again, this time coming within three with strong defensive play and a five point effort by Harrington for a 64-61 LIU lead with just under a minute remaining to play. But in the end a 7-for-8 effort from the free-throw line by the Blackbirds would seal the contest at 71-65.
Troupe led with her second career double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 12 boards. Katie Scherle added a season and game-tying high of 16 points in addition to eight rebounds. Harrington scored 13 points, dished out seven assists and tallied seven steals. Ebony Toliver added eight points and five rebounds in her first career start.
Wirth led the Blackbirds with 16 points including 4-for-6 shooting from behind the arc. Both Sara Oblak and Polona Oberc added 14 points while Susic contributed 10. Oberc led LIU on the board with seven.
Despite the loss, the Greyhounds held a substantial lead in rebounding at 43-27. LIU however shot an impressive 61.5% from three-point range and 82.6% from the charity stripe.
The Greyhounds are back in action at Reitz Arena on Tuesday, January 4 facing Liberty at 7:00.
