Women's Basketball Falls to Wake Forest, 76-50
Dec. 21, 2004
The Greyhounds got within two points of Wake Forest early in the second half but a 13-0 run gave the Demon Deacons the edge in a 76-50 final on Tuesday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum. Loyola falls to 2-7 with the loss while Wake improves to 9-1.
In the first half, Wake Forest jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Jackie Valderas gave Loyola its first basket at 15:47 for a 7-2 score. Wake's Liz Strunk then went on an 8-0 run with two three-point baskets and a layup for a 15-2 Demon Deacons lead. Ebony Toliver ended that run with a basket at 13:40.
With the score set at 19-6, Lauren Troupe tried to give the Greyhounds some momentum with a three-point basket at 10:22 but Cotelia Bond-Young and Jennifer Johnson of Wake Forest stopped that momentum with three-pointers of their own for a 25-9 score with 9:36 remaining. On their next trip down the floor, Katie Scherle gave the Greyhounds a three-point play at 9:27 for a 25-12 score.
Both teams went without a basket for the next several minutes before Bond-Young tallied her second three of the game at 6:38 to put Wake up 28-13. The Greyhounds did well to delete that deficit over the next several minutes by going on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 28-21 with 2:52 left in the half.
Johnson ended the Demon Deacons almost four minute scoring drought at 2:31 and was followed by a three-point basket by Erin Farell for a 33-21 score with just under two minutes remaining. But Loyola's defense did not allow another Wake basket for the remainder of the half as they went on a 6-0 run as the clock ran down for a much slimmer 33-27 Wake Forest lead.
In the start of the second half, the Greyhounds went on a 5-0 run to get within two of the Demon Deacons, 34-32 but after exchanging baskets, Bond-Young hit her third of four three-point baskets to begin a 13-0 run. Wake led 49-34 at the close of that run at 11:54 and Loyola never got any closer.
Bond-Young led four Demon Deacon players in double-figures with 22 points. She was followed by Strunk with 19, Johnson with 15 and Farell with 13.
The Greyhounds outrebounded Wake Forest 44-37 while the Demon Deacons held the advantage in shooting (39.7%-30.9%).
Loyola is back in action at Reitz Arena after the holiday, hosting Long Island University on December 30 and Liberty on January 4.
