Georgetown Tops Women's Basketball, 70-53

WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown fended off a second-half assault from Loyola as Rebekkah Brunson scored 31 points and pulled down 21 rebounds to lead the Hoyas over the Greyhounds, 70-53, Saturday afternoon in McDonough Gym. Georgetown improved to 5-2 with the win while Loyola fell to 3-5 on the season.
Georgetown went on a 17-0 run starting at 8:31 with a jumper by Brunson, holding Loyola scoreless for over six minutes before Krystle Harrington completed a three-point play at 2:11 for a 32-15 score. The Hoyas continued their offensive efforts, getting up by as much as 21 in the closing minutes of play before freshman Ebony Toliver nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 38-20 halftime score.
Loyola worked their offense in the second half, trailing by just nine points at 7:14 after 12 straight points from senior Lindsay Cobb. Cobb drained two threes and two jump shots in just over three minutes. The Hoyas built the lead back up to 13 before freshman Meghan Wood scored back-to-back jump shots to get the Greyhounds within nine again. But that was as close as it would come as Georgetown scored eight straight points to close the contest.
Brunson led the game in both scoring and rebounding. She was followed by Carmen Bruce with 11 and Mary Lisicky with 10 for Georgetown. Bruce also added seven rebounds and assists.
The Greyhounds were led by Cobb with 14 and Harrington with 11 points. Cobb also added six assists while Lauren Troupe pulled down a team-high six boards. Toliver scored a career-high seven points.
Loyola will take a short break for the holidays before traveling to Easton, PA for the Lafayette Holiday Classic.
